Gear Vault received depressing news that Jared Southwick, guitarist of The Dream Is Dead and Harakiri, had passed away as a result of a liver and kidney condition — Southwick was hospitalized earlier this month. His condition rapidly deteriorated.

Jared Southwick passed away Thursday, June 23, 2011.

The Dream Is Dead was a politically charged hardcore punk band based in Indianapolis, Indiana. The band was formed in 2000 with the sole desire of putting friction, abrasiveness, and politics back into the watered down hardcore scene.

The Dream Is Dead will play their final show at this year’s Dudefest to honor Jared’s memory and close the door on a band that pushed hardcore punk in ways many listeners appreciated.

Lambgoat reported the following statement when Southwick fell ill:

“We just want to confirm that our guitar player Jared is indeed gravely ill right now at a hospital in Muncie with a liver and kidney condition (and all the complications that come with it). Thanks everyone for all of your concern, kind words, and visits. We know that he and his family appreciate it. Please keep him in your thoughts.”

Southwick’s funeral took place on June 25th, at the First Presbyterian Church on Riverside Avenue in Muncie, Indiana.

R.I.P. Jared Southwick
