The Guitar Show

Today I was excited to discover “The Guitar Show” on ABC2, well actually my wife discovered it while flicking channels on a lazy sunday afternoon! She called out to me and asked if I knew who this guy was on the TV, I walked in to see the unmistakeable blue Music Man of Steve Morse! Yes it was the incredibly complicated looking 4 pickup model, not the apparently simplified new Steve Morse model, the Music Man SM-Y2D. The reason for this is that this actual show is a re-run of a 13-part TV series which was filmed during 2001 and aired in 2002, and again in 2004. I seemed to miss both somehow but thanks to ABC2 I have another chance! Unfortunately I have missed the first couple of episodes which featured Angus Young, Bob Brozman, Richie Sambora and Jeff Beck but not to worry as they are featured again in other episodes along with guitar heavyweights such as Eric Johnson, Tommy Emmanuel, B.B. King and John Lee Hooker!

Each 30 minute episode of The Guitar Show has a number of regular segments, the most important of which is a feature interview which takes the viewer backstage and onstage with a major guitarist. They discuss the influences and inspirations behind their playing, tell us how they get their sound, talk about their instruments and technique, and offer some musical and technical tips along the way. You also get tips from pros such as how to get a good guitar sound, and using the correct equipment. This week took you inside Studio 301 for advice on guitar cables. It was pretty straightforward advice about using good quality guitar cables over cheap ones but it was nice to have another angle in the program.

Regular Guitar Show segments include:

- Upfront - featured player interviews & performances

- Tone Control - how the great players get their sound

- Rare Beauties - rare vintage & collectable instruments not often seen

- Master Class - musical tips & brief lessons from the pros

- Studio Call - recording & production tips & techniques

Now this is an Australian production so I doubt it will be appearing on any international networks anytime soon but I’m sure you all have your fair share of guitar shows! I’ll certainly be tuning in over the next 10 weeks.
